Server downtime today Wednesday at 4:15pm (Wed 30-Sep-2026 at 10:53)
All Department members:
An update to coxeter, mail, web, sphere, pump, users, seminars, and mathplus servers will be applied and they will be rebooted starting at 4:15pm today Wednesday, September 30th. Some updates will be applied somewhat earlier if it appears that the impact on the system should be minimal, so minor software issues may be noticed. We expect that the servers will be back up around 5:00pm if there are no unforeseen problems.
Remember that you will need to run startwww on coxeter to once again be able to access the www-data directory. For more information in this regard (and other IT help) please consult https://services.math.utoronto.ca.
RT systems users:
Additionally, the virtual machines which include all request tracker instances (rt-adminXXX), TAPP, and roster, will be rebooted today at approximately 5pm, and we expect them to be back online around 5:30pm if there are no unforeseen problems.
Staff members:
The remote drives (H, K, etc.) will be rebooted at 4:30pm. Please make sure that prior to that time you have saved all your files and closed any programs accessing the drives (ideally you can just log out of your account). We expect the server to be back online by 5:00pm if there are no unforeseen problems.
coxeter has been migrated, you will need to update your ssh keys (Mon 28-Sep-2026 at 13:06)
"coxeter" has been updated and you should now be able to log in again. If you "ssh" you will likely get the following warning:
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
@ WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED! @
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
IT IS POSSIBLE THAT SOMEONE IS DOING SOMETHING NASTY!
Someone could be eavesdropping on you right now (man-in-the-middle attack)!
It is also possible that a host key has just been changed.
The fingerprint for the RSA key sent by the remote host is
SHA256:xH9XMYRBpOLWtxWf2qz6CkIF4A2b0VwMzHU/3TASdIE.
Please contact your system administrator.
Add correct host key in /home/user/.ssh/known_hosts to get rid of this message.
Offending RSA key in /home/user/.ssh/known_hosts:31
remove with:
ssh-keygen -R 'coxeter.math.utoronto.ca'
Host key for coxeter.math.utoronto.ca has changed and you have requested strict checking.
Host key verification failed.
In order to clear this warning you can type the command it suggests (non-Linux systems might not show the command, but it works the same) i.e.:
ssh-keygen -R 'coxeter.math.utoronto.ca'
and run "ssh" again. When asked to accept the new key please make sure it matches one of the keys listed below, otherwise please contact requests@math.utoronto.ca

Please note that you no longer need to use:

when connecting with "ssh".
"coxeter" upgrade and "sphere" reboot today (Wed 23-Sep-2026 at 13:43)
"coxeter" will be migrated to a new computer today, Wednesday September 23rd. The operating system will be upgraded and we expect that access to "coxeter" will be interrupted from approximately 2:30pm to 5pm that day. Additionally the compute server "sphere" will also need to be rebooted, and access to the "coxeter" home directory (i.e. through the "startcoxeter" command) will remain unavailable until both machines are back online. Public "coxeter" terminals will be affected by this disruption, but the mail and web servers hosted by the math department should remain operational ("pine" users can still access email via thunderbird or the web interface).
All files and accounts will be transferred to the new system, but the newer versions of programs that are commonly used may look and work a bit differently, please let us know at requests@math.utoronto.ca if you encounter any issues after the migration has been completed, or for any questions you may have regarding the disruption.
All request tracker (RT) instances down for maintenance today (Fri 04-Sep-2026 at 10:31)
All request tracker (RT) instances will be down for maintenance today for the migration from version 4 to version 5. They should be back online late Friday afternoon. No changes will be made to the emails, websites, or logins, so they should continue to work as before (except for maybe a few changs to the RT interface in version 5). Old tickets will still be there, and new tickets submitted during the downtime should show up after the upgrade.
